Why Does Your Child Need to Visit the Dentist?
At your child’s dental visit, our dentists will fully inform you of what preventive steps, (mainly involving oral hygiene and dietary habits) you and your child can take to reduce the risk of dental or medical problem.
It is essential that you actively engage in your child’s dental health care and development by:
- Supervising and helping them with their oral hygiene;
- Ensuring that they adopt healthy dietary habits;
- Bringing them for regular dental check-ups.
Why Does Your Child Need to Visit the Dentist?
Helping Your Child Cope with Their First Dental Visit
Your child’s visit to the dentist may cause anxiety. Perhaps due to an unpleasant past experience or fear of the unknown.
At Nuffield Dental, our dentists and nurses are specially trained in behavioural management; your child will have a gentle, friendly, safe, and stress-free dental experience.
To enhance manage your child's dental visit, you can also observe the following vital points:
- Schedule their appointment in the morning (after they have had a good night’s rest), as children tend to be cooperative during this time of the day;
- Try to personally accompany your child for their dental visit, especially if it is their first time;
- From the day before their appointment right till after their appointment, avoid exposing your child to stressful events;
- Avoid punishing them on the day of their appointment;
- Before and during their visit, try to resist giving instructions on how they should behave with the dentist.

What Does the Procedure Involve?
Stage 1: Full Dental Assessment
- Listening to Concerns & Assessing Dental History
Our dentists will listen to any concerns you and your child may have about their oral health. They will inspect your child’s medical history, so it is essential to inform them of any medical conditions, medications, or allergies your child may have.
- Recording and Evaluating Dental Habits
We will also investigate your child’s routine oral hygiene, dietary habits, and previous dental visits.
- Dental Check-Up
General Maintenance:
Based on their age and requirement, your child may require a scale and polish and a topical fluoride treatment as part of general maintenance for their oral health. This is done in order to safeguard their adult teeth as they mature.
Stage 2: Personalised Treatment Plan
- Weighing the Treatment Options
If our dentists identify any dental diseases your child has and that further treatment is required - they will thoroughly discuss your child’s condition, benefits and risks of each possible treatment option, the procedure of having treatment, and create a personalised treatment plan for your child.
- Educating on Good Oral Care Habits
How Often Should Your Child Visit the Dentist?
- Familiarising with the dental environment to become fear-free regular dental attendees;
- Keeping track of their dental development;
- Ensuring that they have good oral health habits in place.
They should then be brought for a routine dental check-up once every 3 to 6 months or immediately if they experience any dental emergencies.
