Bite Balancing
Bite balancing is the tailoring of customised alterations to your bite to ensure that all your upper and lower teeth meet harmoniously with each other during biting, sideways, and front and back movements.
What is Bite Balancing?
What is Bite Balancing?
Bite balancing first involves the analysis of your bite to identify if there are any specific areas that are placed under heavy or discordant forces. If such areas are present, adjustments are tailored to give you a healthy and harmonious bite.
Adjustments can be in the form of adding a tooth-coloured filling or minimal removal (less than 1 mm) of tooth substance in specific areas.
Do I Need Bite Balancing Treatment?
- You have suffered from broken, chipped or cracked teeth due to heavy or discordant biting forces;
- You suffer from Jaw Joint Dysfunction, which causes you to clench or grind your teeth, resulting in the straining of jaw muscles. This leads to facial pain;
- You are biting heavily or discordantly on just one or a few teeth, or one side of your mouth significantly than the other – bite balancing can help to prevent tooth fractures, cracked teeth and Jaw Joint Dysfunction associated with this.

What Does the Procedure Involve?
Stage 1: Consultation
- At your treatment consultation, your dentist will thoroughly explore your concerns and examine your bite. Any necessary X-rays, scans (CBCT, intraoral, T-scans or EMG) or mouth impressions will be taken.
- From the findings, your dentist will discuss if Bite Balancing or other treatment options are recommended for your situation.
Stage 3: Post-Treatment Care
After bite balancing, you are likely to detect a change to your bite, which is now likely to feel comfortable. Most patients are able to quickly acclimatise and adapt to this as their normal and healthier bite.
Stage 2: Bite Balancing Procedure
- If bite balancing is opted for, the procedure will last 15 to 60 minutes depending on the number of areas that require adjustment.
- It is a painless and minimally invasive procedure, often requiring no local anaesthetic.
