RESTORING YOUR RECEDING GUMS

Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation®

Pinhole gum rejuvenation is a minimally-invasive procedure performed on receding gums to prevent the exposure of teeth roots.

In this procedure, a pinhole is first created, gums are stretched, the roots are covered, and collagen is inserted to stimulate novel gum tissue growth.

What is Gum Recession?

What is Gum Recession?

Gum recession, also known as gingival recession, is when your gum line sinks, exposing your tooth crown or tooth root. This can be due to:

  • Gum disease;
  • Tartar build-up along your gum line (this is why a regular scale and polish, and a deep clean is crucial);
  • Individual tooth, gum, soft tissue and bone anatomy;
  • Deep fillings, onlays, or crowns placed below the gum line;
  • A destructive bite which can be mended with orthodontic teeth straightening and orthognathic surgery;
  • Forceful tooth brushing and flossing, tongue or lip piercing or poorly fitting dentures, which can affect your gums.

Why Should You Take Gum Recession Seriously?

Gum recession can have many harmful consequences, including:
  • Experiencing short and sharp pains, especially when eating or drinking something cold. If left untreated, this may progress and worsen into a long, dull ache;
  • Plaque bacteria retention around the affected tooth, which increases your risk of having gum disease, tooth decay, toothache and dental infections;
  • Creation of cavities on the roots of your teeth due to their structure being eroded away by abrasive tooth brushing;
  • Poor pink (gums) to white (teeth) ratio which sacrifices the aesthetics of your smile;
  • Fear of tooth loss as you may notice your gums constantly receding.

Benefits of Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation

Engineered by Dr John Chao, the Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation® technique is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession to prevent all the problems listed above. Unlike traditional tissue grafting methods, it delivers a much-enhanced patient experience as it is:

Non-Invasive Procedure

Due to the nature of the procedure, the use of scalpels or invasive surgical tools is not needed.

Unlike other gum recession treatments where soft tissue from other parts of the mouth is used, the Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation® technique does not use the technique of gum grafting.

Therefore it is suture-free, and no painful or uncomfortable stitches are used. This also means faster recovery after the treatment and minimal downtime.

Natural Looking

This treatment uses collagen production to stimulate novel gum tissue growth, resulting in natural-looking gums.

Long-Lasting Results

If good oral hygiene is practised, and gums are well taken care of, the effects of this gum treatment can last a lifetime.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

Stage 1: Gum Analysis

  • Your gums are first thoroughly analysed and measured to determine the severity of your gum recession. We also take some intraoral scans to allow you an enhanced visualisation of the proposed result.

Stage 3: Post-Operative Care

  • After the procedure is completed, you will be given care instructions on how to look after yourself. This will include advice on oral hygiene, painkillers, and other good oral health habits. If you smoke, you should avoiding smoking for at least one week, or longer. You will also be provided with an antibacterial mouth rinse and gel to apply over your gums for 1-2 weeks.

  • Healing is generally fast and takes place within a few days. You should be able to go about your daily routine a day after the surgery.

  • We will need to review the progress after 1 month, where follow-up gum measurements will be taken to determine the level of enhancement of your gum recession.

Stage 2: Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation®

  • A tiny hole will be created in the receding gum tissues. Once the pinhole has been made, a specially designed instrument will be placed into the hole. This device gently peels and loosens the gum tissue.

  • Once the gums are in the desired position, collagen strips will be inserted into the pinhole. These strips minimally keep the gums steady and help create novel tissue, ultimately securing the gums in place.

  • The Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation® procedure roughly takes 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the number of areas that require rejuvenation and the severity of your gum recession.

  • Surgical areas will be numbed using a local anaesthetic to prevent you from feeling any pain during the procedure. You can expect to feel some pressure and vibrations. You may additionally be placed under prior IV sedation, or General Anaesthesia depending on your concerns and agreed individualised treatment plan.

Risks of Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation

  • Generally, the Pinhole Surgical Technique is much faster and safer than traditional gum grafting or soft tissue grafting as there are no incisions and cuts made.

  • However, the risk of tenderness, swelling, or infection is still present.
