Single tooth implants are a permanent alternative to dentures and dental bridges of replacing a missing tooth. A dental implant replaces not just the tooth, it also replaces the tooth root, allowing for numerous benefits.
Single Tooth Dental Implant
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that serves to replace a missing tooth. They are shaped like screws, made of metal, usually titanium, or a non-metal material, usually ceramic.
It supports the crown, an artificial tooth made of porcelain or ceramic. Both components mimic the shape of a natural tooth and its root: an actual tooth where the crown functions as the tooth, and the metal post, the tooth root.

What Are Single Tooth Dental Implants?
What Are Single Tooth Dental Implants?
Single tooth dental implants are surgically inserted into the jaw bone. Over time, the implants would fuse with the natural bone, stimulating healthy bone growth. Due to this, a sturdy foundation is built that functions as a base and provides adequate support to the artificial tooth.
Reasons for a Missing Tooth
Reasons for a Missing Tooth
There are several reasons why someone has a single missing tooth, and the type of dental problems that would require tooth replacement. These include:
- Gum disease;
- Tooth decay resulting from poor oral care or from exposure to the dentin or tooth root;
- Trauma causing tooth injury;
- Genetic conditions.
Benefits of Single Tooth Dental Implants
Adjacent Teeth Unaffected
Dental bridges are made of two or more dental crowns placed over adjacent teeth. In order for the fixed bridge to fit over these teeth, the teeth would need to be shaved down.
Dental implants however do not depend on the teeth surrounding it, and function as isolated units.

Overview of the Single Tooth Dental Implant Procedure
- Incisions are made to expose the jawbone;
- A deep hole is drilled into the jawbone and into which the implant is placed;
- Gums are stitched together to cover the exposed bone.
Overview of the Single Tooth Dental Implant Procedure
What Does the Procedure Involve?
Stage 1: Pre-Treatment
- Assessing Suitability
During your initial treatment consultation, our dentists will evaluate your oral condition to determine your suitability for receiving dental implants.
Having adequate healthy bone mass is critical to having an implant placed. Should you have a weak bone structure or not enough bone, and if you would like to still go through with having a dental implant, either a smaller implant is placed or a bone grafting procedure or sinus lift surgery needs to be carried out.
Sometimes if deemed unsuitable, dentures or dental bridges may be recommended as options to address a missing tooth.
Once it has been determined that you are suitable for a dental implant, your dentist will take X-rays of your jaw and impressions of your teeth and gums.
Stage 3: Post-Operative Care
- Pain, swelling and bruising are common side-effects that patients deal with. Antibiotics and painkillers will be provided after each surgery. A soft diet is also recommended.
- The healing needs to be monitored and to ensure that the jawbone successfully fuses to the implant, and if not, might need to be removed.
- As with the maintenance of natural teeth, stellar oral hygiene needs to be practised.
Stage 2: Single Tooth Dental Implant
The entire process of having a dental implant, of teeth removal, of placing the implant, and finally of having the artificial tooth fixed could take several months.
This is due not solely to the time required for each stage of the process but also due to the time required between each for stage healing to take place.
Anaesthesia options that would allow you to successfully deal with pain include local anaesthesia, sedation or general anaesthesia.
- Tooth removal. In some cases, if the tooth is damaged or decayed, it would require the tooth to be removed first.
- Jawbone grafting. If bone mass is inadequate, this procedure is required.
- Placing the dental implant.
- Allowing bone to grow and healing to take place.
- Abutment placement. The abutment is the piece that connects the implant with the crown. This surgery is sometimes carried out together with the placing of the dental implant.
- Artificial tooth or crown placement. This is solely done once your jawbone is strong enough to support the tooth. This artificial tooth can be either removed or fixed.
